07. Critical Mixing and Mastering

A practical advanced course in critical listening, mix judgement and mastering preparation, covering reference tracks, translation, tonal balance, dynamics, stereo imaging, loudness, limiting and final quality control.

Session 1 – Critical Listening and Reference Tracks
How to listen more objectively, choose useful reference tracks and make better mixing and mastering decisions.

Session 2 – Mix Translation and Monitoring Decisions
Understanding how mixes translate across speakers, headphones, cars, phones and different listening environments.

Session 3 – Advanced EQ and Tonal Balance
Using EQ to shape overall tone, manage masking, improve clarity and create a balanced frequency spectrum.

Session 4 – Advanced Compression and Dynamic Control
Using compression, parallel compression, multiband compression and dynamic processing to control energy and impact.

Session 5 – Saturation, Harmonic Enhancement and Colour
Using saturation, distortion, tape-style processing and harmonic enhancement to add weight, warmth and character.

Session 6 – Stereo Width, Depth and Imaging
Controlling width, centre focus, depth, mono compatibility and stereo image decisions in advanced mixes.

Session 7 – Mix Bus Processing and Final Mix Preparation
Using mix bus EQ, compression, limiting and metering carefully while preparing a mix for mastering.

Session 8 – Mastering Concepts and Workflow
Understanding what mastering is, how it differs from mixing, and how to approach a structured mastering workflow.

Session 9 – Loudness, True Peak and Streaming Standards
Understanding LUFS, true peak, headroom, streaming normalisation and sensible loudness targets.

Session 10 – Mastering EQ, Compression and Limiting
Using mastering EQ, compression and limiting to finalise tone, dynamics, loudness and translation.

Session 11 – Final Checks, Export Formats and Quality Control
Checking masters for technical issues, exporting correct file formats and preparing final audio for release.
